Q: What is Enterprise-Q?
A: Enterprise-Q (EQ) is an enterprise management tool that integrates with the Tivoli product suite and provides features that do not exist or are difficult to implement in Tivoli. EQ features include:
  • A transaction queuing mechanism
  • An automatic profile distribution when target systems become available
  • Re-distribution of profiles in case of failures
  • Transaction reports, including successful/failed distributions
  • EQ can be used both for deployment of PcManagedNodes and Endpoints on new sites, as well as support for existing Tivoli sites.

Q: What Tivoli applications does EQ support?
A: The evaluation version of EQ is identical to the production version, which supports:
  • Tivoli Framework v3.2 or greater. The latest supported version is 3.7.1;
  • Tivoli Software Distribution v3.2 or greater (optional). The latest supported version is 4.1;
  • Tivoli Inventory v3.2 or greater (optional). The latest supported version is 4.0;
  • Tivoli Distributed Monitoring v3.2 or greater (optional). The latest supported version is 3.7;
Please contact sales-Q.com for details.

Q: We already have thousands of nodes deployed in Tivoli, and we have many profiles created. Will EQ support existing nodes/profiles?
A: EQ supports all existing nodes and profiles including endpoints and PCManagedNodes.

Q: Do we need to change anything in the Tivoli configuration to install EQ?
A: Yes. The gateway login policy (if you plan to use Endpoints) and Userlink’s set_ip.pl file (if you plan to use PcManagedNodes). See the Enterprise-Q Getting Started Guide for more information.

Q: Why use EQ when Tivoli has queuing features in Framework 3.7.x?
A: Advantages of Enterprise-Q include:
  • Field-tested solution available today
  • All of our customers are reference accounts for the product
  • Can be installed and operational in a single day
  • Integrates readily with your existing Tivoli environment requiring absolutely no Tivoli upgrades
  • Does not adversely affect your existing infrastructure and therefore will not disrupt daily enterprise management activities
  • Works with existing Software Distribution objects like File Packages, Auto Packs, and FP Blocks
  • Provides a consistent and consolidated queuing mechanism for other distributions including Inventory Profiles, Sentry Profiles, Tivoli Tasks, Tivoli Product/Patch installations, etc.
  • Automates the initiation, retry, tracking and reporting of all your Tivoli enterprise activities
  • Simple, user-friendly, web-based interface facilitates a two-tiered support team: one group with Tivoli know-how to maintain Tivoli, and a second group to queue and track distributions
Overhead/Limitations of queuing mechanism in Framework 3.7.x:
  • Customer must design, develop, and implement a migration path to upgrade their existing Tivoli infrastructure in order to begin using this feature
  • SD 4.x does not support existing File Packages, Auto Packs, and FP Blocks
  • Software Package objects must be created in order to take advantage of the queuing mechanism built into SD 4.x
  • Framework 3.7.x queuing mechanism does not support PC Managed Nodes and Managed Nodes
  • No queuing available for object types like Inventory Profiles, Sentry Profiles, and Tivoli Tasks
In short, we view Framework 3.7.x queuing as a secondary and complementary queuing mechanism that will enhance the performance of Enterprise-Q, and provide our customer base a more efficient means to manage the desktop environment.

  • To complete the uninstall process, go to directory where EQ was installed (for example: c:q) and remove all remaining files from that directory.

Q: I want to move EQ from one computer to another computer. What should I do?
A: Use the following procedure to move EQ from one computer to another:
  • Export contents of tables EQ_NODES, EQ_ACTIONS and EQ_ACTION_STATUS from the Oracle database on the first computer (you must perform this step, even if you plan to use the same external database for new EQ install – during installation, EQ wipes out these three tables in the database);
  • Request new evaluation license from us http://www.capitalsoftware.com and install EQ on another computer into the same directory as on the first computer;
  • Stop EQServer service on the second computer;
  • Copy contents of LOGS, QSTORE, and QSTORESTATUS subdirectories from first to second computer;
  • Copy contents of CFGACTIONS directory if you created any new actions on the first computer;
  • Copy contents of CFGAUTH directory if you created new users;
  • Start EQServer service on the second computer;
  • Import contents of tables EQ_NODES, EQ_ACTIONS and EQ_ACTION_STATUS into the Oracle database;
  • Uninstall EQ from the first computer.
Q: I just received new evaluation or permanent license. How do I replace the old license with a new one?
A: To replace a license:
  • Stop EQServer service using "Services" program from Control panel, or type "net stop EQServer" from DOS command line;
  • If you have Enterprise-Q v1.3 installed then edit the file <EQ_installation_directory>gq.cfg and replace old license in the line LICENSE = "..." with a new license. Skip this step if you have Enterprise-Q 1.4 or later installed;
  • Edit file %winnt%system32driverstcQsetup_env.pl and replace old license in the line ="..."; with a new license;
  • Start EQServer service.
Q: I just changed the hostname of the computer where EQ runs, and EQ no longer works. What can I do?
A: You will need to obtain a new evaluation or permanent license.

Q: Is there any documentation on EQ?
A: Please see the EQ menu for the link to Enterprise-Q documentation.
